Family shares details of visit to Shanghai
Dianne L Stallings, Ruidoso NewsPublished 1:13 p.m. MT March 28, 2019
An insider's view of life in one of the most populated cities in the world
Carl and Toni Stubbs will share details of their visit to Shanghai, China during a program scheduled for 2 p.m., March 31 at the Capitan Public Library.
Shanghai literally means "on the sea," reflecting the city's elevation of 4 meters. It is one of the four municipalities under the direct administration of the central government of the People's Republic of China, the largest city in China by population, and the second most populous city in the world.
The Stubbs traveled to Shanghai in 2018 to visit their son Evan, and his wife, Jennifer.
Formerly a librarian at both Ruidoso and Albuquerque Public Libraries, Jennifer took a job with the New York University, Shanghai campus in 2017, opening the opportunity for the Stubbs to travel halfway across the world to the city of 26.32 million people.
The Stubbs will share photos and the logistics of traveling to and touring around Shanghai.
The couple walked, rode the magnetic levitation train, subways, taxis, scooters and bicycles, negotiating the streets to visit museums, art galleries, gardens and parks, temples, markets, a Communist memorial, an ancient walled city and an ancient water town.
The Stubbs will give those attending the presentation an insider's look at the city.
"Jenny works as a librarian for New York University, Shanghai campus," Stubbs said. "While in Shanghai, we saw her make a presentation and co-lead discussion on property rights of technical information that is published.
"Evan is connected to an organic farm on the outskirts of Shanghai. He provides tours and sets up possible sales of plots where organic, non-toxic food is raised. He is president of an organization of foreigners in Shanghai."
Most of the members are wives of executives working in Shanghai, Stubbs said.
"Yes, he is one guy among a lot of executives wives," Stubbs said. "He runs a majong game one day a week."
The couple moved to Shanghai in November, 2017. Evan went to school in Ruidoso and graduated from Ruidoso High School in 2001. He and Jenny graduated from New Mexico State University in 2006.
Carl and Toni Stubbs have lived in Lincoln county for 31 years.
He retired from the New Mexico State Environment Department in January 2010, and Toni retired from the Ruidoso school system as an art teacher in 2008.
They have volunteered with the Capitan Library since 2005.
Refreshments will be served after the presentation at the library at 101 E. 2nd Street in Capitan.

At your Capitan Public Library check out the New Mexico FamilyPass for FREE access to State Museums/Historic Sites
Don't forget the value of FamilyPass created by the Department of Cultural Affairs and New Mexico State Library special for the public libraries across the state.
Recently our library director, Paulette Arnone, used the New Mexico FamilyPass at the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe on Saturday, March 23. With the free entrance by using the FamiyPass, her family and friends save over $100 for a guided tour. They found the visit to the museum to be educational and an enjoyable way to spend the afternoon. When returning the pass, they thanked the Capitan Public Library for providing this wonderful service.
Once again we want to remind local residents that they can visit Capitan Public Library to check out a FamilyPass good for free

Synopsis of Lynne Jeffrey's program at Creative Aging
Lynne is a volunteer with CPL/N2SS. Her talk at Creative Aging on Holistic Pain Management was insightful and informative.
CREATIVE AGING MEETING
March 18, 2019
CONTACT PERSON: CLARA FARAH
ARTICLE WRITER: HOLLY BRADEN (braden_holly@yahoo.com)
Creative Aging’s March meeting at Eastern New Mexico University –Ruidoso was a discussion of Holistic Pain Management presented by Lynne Jeffrey, a registered
nurse with a license in holistic medicine. She presented the Holistic Circle, which divided
people’s lives into three parts: mental, physical, and emotional. All parts are equally important,
and if people concentrate on the parts of the circle that are strongest, the weakest parts of the
circle will repair themselves. Jeffrey suggested that we all journal every day. This journal should
include our medications, our pain levels, our energy levels, our exercise times, our food & drink
intake, and our social times. It is a way of comparing and identifying the weaknesses in our
holistic circle. Chronic pain is increased or decreased by diet, hydration, social interaction,
depression, exercise, faith, rest, and cleanliness. Ms. Jeffrey suggested to the group of 50
participants that we could manage and control chronic pain by taking charge of our lives and
discussing alternatives to the sole use of prescription drugs with our medical providers.
The next Creative Aging program will be a panel discussion of Domestic Abuse. The group will
meet at ENMU-Ruidoso on March 22, 2019 at 10:00 a.m.
All meetings are open to the public and refreshments are served.
