Capitan Public Library presents for the 1st Friday Event of November the music of "The Hopefuls".   The music begins at 7 PM on Friday, Nov. 6.

Come join us for some good 'ole foot-tapping music by local musicians:
 Roland Burnett, Dale Boren, Roy Black, Randy Jones, Corinna Ripple & Chuck George. 
These musicians strum and sing some mighty fine Western, gospel and old-time music for our listening pleasure.  
Plus, nothing like a good rhyming cowboy to put a smile on your face, so get ready to enjoy poetic compositions by cowboy poet, Chuck George.

At the Capitan Public Library,  Ellen Wilson, voice coach and teacher at ENMU-Ruidoso, offers two FREE music workshops on Saturday, November 7 and 21.  The three-hour afternoon sessions begin at 1p.m. to 4 p.m.    "How to free your voice"  workshop includes self expression, projection, physical and vocal exercises, music appreciation and individual/group practice of Christmas carols.

On Saturday, November 14,  a 6-hour FREE drama/theater workshop conducted by Myranda  
Rodriguez Waldo is offered.  The workshop begins at 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., with a half-hour lunch break (bring sack lunch ). Areas of focus will be voice projection, improvisational exercises, make up, theater vocabulary exploration, theater community resources, casting/audition process and readers' theater.

More on Flu Shots - if you are interested in getting one this year

Presbyterian Medical Group will provide free flu shots to those 18 and older at three locations in Ruidoso, Carrizozo and Capitan until the vaccine is gone.

The opportunities for immunization are:

·         from  1:30 to 3:30 pm on Friday, October 23, at the Carrizozo Health Center, 710 Avenue E,  in Carrizozo; and

·         from 10 am to noon at the Capitan Medical Clinic, 405 Lincoln Way, in Capitan.

The 2015-2016 flu vaccine will protect against four strains of seasonal flu, the Influenza A H3N2-type virus, the Influenza A H1N1-type virus and two Influenza B-type viruses.

For their safety, children cannot receive flu shots through these clinics. Contact your child's primary care provider to receive a properly dosed flu shot.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone six months and older receive the flu vaccine.

The Lincoln County Medical Center is a county-owned facility that has been managed by Presbyterian Healthcare Services since 1972.  Lincoln County Medical Center and Presbyterian Healthcare Services operate a hospital, a primary care and specialty clinic, three rural clinics and a countywide ambulance service in the county. Lincoln County Medical Center is one of eight hospitals run by Presbyterian, which also has a statewide health plan and a growing multi-specialty medical group.

And again: The Ruidoso Health Clinic will be  at the Ruidoso Community Center to give out FLU shots on Monday, October 26, from 9:00am to 4:00pm and at the Capitan School Gym on Wednesday, October 28, from 11:30am to 1:30pm.

 At the  program on Tuesday night, Oct. 20 at 6 pm, Be Well N.M. representatives will tell you about the changes in New Mexico's official health insurance exchange.  They're serving free pizza!

Wednesday morning, Oct. 21, at 10:30 am, learn about changes in this year's Medicare program.

Flu Shot Clinics:
  The Ruidoso Health Clinic will be  at the Ruidoso Community Center to give out FLU shots on Monday, October 26, from 9:00am to 4:00pm and at the Capitan School Gym on Wednesday, October 28, from 11:30am to 1:30pm.

First Friday - October 2 at 7 p.m. - author Donna Birchell

"Every vine has a story"  Nearly four hundred years ago, New Mexico's wine journey began when the first Mission grapes were planted in 1629.  At the Capitan Public Library on Friday, October 2, at 7 p.m., taste this rich legacy, the oldest in the United States, in Donna Blake Birchell's Power Point presentation of the struggles and triumphs that shaped New Mexico's burgeoning wine industry. 

Her book for this discussion, New Mexico Wine: an Enchanting History, is published by the History Press.

Birchell's account of the history finds that despite greedy Spanish monarchs, prim teetotalers and the one-hundred-year flood's gift of root rot and alkaline deposits, New Mexico's winemakers continue to harvest the fruits of sun-soaked volcanic soils and clear skies.  Their family stories blend with the vines and traditions of the Old World. 

Birchell will also verbally give a brief tour of some of the wineries included in the book and tell of their specialties as we follow the New Mexico Wine Trail.  

Three wineries donated bottles of wine to the library to be discussed during the presentation.  Tularosa Vineyards donated their international award winner and number-one seller, Sangiovese.  Cottonwood Winery in Artesia sent a bottle of their #1 dry red wine, 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon.  Dos Viejos Winery in Tularosa donated their State Fair of N.M. award-winning and customers' favorite 2006 Sangiovese.  

Donna Blake Birchell is a native New Mexican and wine enthusiast, whose passion for history developed at a young age. Birchell, a former librarian, is currently a board member of the Southeastern New Mexico Historical Society.  She has authored four books on local New Mexico history: Carlsbad and Carlsbad Caverns, Eddy County, New Mexico Wine: An Enchanting History, and Wicked Women of New Mexico.

Refreshments will be served after the discussion. Books will be available for purchase and signing by the author.  She will also have copies of Wicked Women of NM available.

Michael has been a professional artist for most of his life.  His specialty is oil and watercolor.  The Hurd La Rinconada Gallery contains prints of originals that Michael has created over the years.  Much of the scenery painted in his landscapes is straight from his home on Sentinal Ranch in San Patrico, NM.  As the youngest son of renowned artists, Peter Hurd and Henriette Wyeth-Hurd, Michael is following in a long line of artists.

Starting in October: FREE ART WORKSHOPS FOR ADULTS

Thanks to a small grant received from Otero County Electric Cooperative, Inc., the Capitan Public Library is pleased to announce a series of free art workshops for adults to be held in the forthcoming months at the library at 101 E. 2nd Street in Capitan.

The first will be a two-part writers'workshop on Saturdays, October 10 and 17,  from 9 am to noon, conducted by Linda Rodriguez, a published writer from Carrizozo. If you have ever wanted to write a memoir for your family or develop a short story, learn more about developing characters or build momentum in a novel, here's your opportunity.

Info meeting on Otero Electric rate increase

If your electricity comes from Otero Electric, you may be interested in attending the meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 17,  at the Ruidoso Convention Center.  The discussion will center on the prospective increases to your bill.  Please pass this on.

The major increase is in the customer charge going from $16 to $25.  They have done a cost analysis that shows the actual customer cost to the company of $35.  The rest is made up by usage.  The argument is who should carry the cost of business, those who use more or all those who are connected.

If 25 people formally object to the proposed increase it must go to the rate commission to be considered.

Otero Electric likely has sufficient paperwork to get an increase.  The bottom line is that the bank requires Otero to collect $1.5 million in excess of their basic loan payments.

Book Club - Start Reading your October book!

The Book Club meets the first Thursday of every month at 10 a.m. at the library.  On October 1, they will be discussing Orange is the New Black.  Everyone is welcome to come to the library and join in the discussion.

 Have you been watching the new season of Longmire series on Netflick?  (Spoiler Alert!)  Longmire is interviewing for a deputy sheriff and he has the candidates discussing Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.  Well, this one fellow says, "I can't get Malkovitch's voice out of my head."  Tsk, tsk.   He didn't get the job.


Now, you could say I am guilty of cheating, because I have not read all of Craig Johnson's books.  But they don't show that Aussie, Robert Taylor.
