An insider's view of life in one of the most populated cities in the world
Carl and Toni Stubbs will share details of their visit to Shanghai, China during a program scheduled for 2 p.m., March 31 at the Capitan Public Library.
Shanghai literally means "on the sea," reflecting the city's elevation of 4 meters. It is one of the four municipalities under the direct administration of the central government of the People's Republic of China, the largest city in China by population, and the second most populous city in the world.
The Stubbs traveled to Shanghai in 2018 to visit their son Evan, and his wife, Jennifer.
Formerly a librarian at both Ruidoso and Albuquerque Public Libraries, Jennifer took a job with the New York University, Shanghai campus in 2017, opening the opportunity for the Stubbs to travel halfway across the world to the city of 26.32 million people.
The Stubbs will share photos and the logistics of traveling to and touring around Shanghai.
The couple walked, rode the magnetic levitation train, subways, taxis, scooters and bicycles, negotiating the streets to visit museums, art galleries, gardens and parks, temples, markets, a Communist memorial, an ancient walled city and an ancient water town.
The Stubbs will give those attending the presentation an insider's look at the city.
"Jenny works as a librarian for New York University, Shanghai campus," Stubbs said. "While in Shanghai, we saw her make a presentation and co-lead discussion on property rights of technical information that is published.
"Evan is connected to an organic farm on the outskirts of Shanghai. He provides tours and sets up possible sales of plots where organic, non-toxic food is raised. He is president of an organization of foreigners in Shanghai."
Most of the members are wives of executives working in Shanghai, Stubbs said.
"Yes, he is one guy among a lot of executives wives," Stubbs said. "He runs a majong game one day a week."
The couple moved to Shanghai in November, 2017. Evan went to school in Ruidoso and graduated from Ruidoso High School in 2001. He and Jenny graduated from New Mexico State University in 2006.
Carl and Toni Stubbs have lived in Lincoln county for 31 years.
He retired from the New Mexico State Environment Department in January 2010, and Toni retired from the Ruidoso school system as an art teacher in 2008.
They have volunteered with the Capitan Library since 2005.
Refreshments will be served after the presentation at the library at 101 E. 2nd Street in Capitan.
