Pat Garrett recognized for Communtiy Achievement from the New Mexico Library Association

Pat Garrett, Library Director for 16+ years at the Capitan Library, received the 2016 Community Achievement Award at the NMLA Conference November 3rd in Albuquerque.

NMLA has been giving awards since 1957 to honor those who have made an important contribution on behalf of New Mexico Libraries. NMLA presents awards each year at the yearly conference.

• Community Achievement Award – this award is give to librarians (those certified or with a degree) for outstanding library service or achievement at the local level. As the Capitan Public Library celebrates its 20th anniversary in November 2016, it is ever so fitting for Pat to be recognized for her tireless work as the director of CPL for the past 16+ years.  The community enjoys a beautiful library that is well staffed by volunteers and offers many programs for the enlightenment of the patrons, their children and the rest of the population in this rural area.  Pat's leadership has been instrumental in the success of CPL.

Creative Aging Monthly Meeting, Friday, November 18th at 9am at ENMU-Ruidoso

Agenda’s focus is on vulnerable older adults in Lincoln County:

 Presenters include: Adult Protective Services, Home Health Care-Encompass, and Senior Center former employees experienced with Meals on Wheels services. 

This panel will be followed by a general update on current projects of 
Creative Aging.

At 11 am the new intergenerational mentorship program for ENMU Students will meet to continue developing their plan with Daniel Waldo.

Compuclinic: helping older adults on their computers & phones. At ENMU-Ruidoso on Thursdays

The first "Compuclinic"  (brand new name)  was a success with 5 students last Thursday.  Please check us out on Thursdays in the computer lab at ENMU-Ruidoso starting at 10am. Depending on interest, the session can last up to two hours.

This coming Thursday, November 17, we will start with a short video or lecture on terminology, followed by individual Q&A. The beauty of such an informal tutorial model is that we all help each other. Or, some of us help others, such as a fellow student convinced me to clean up my Face Book and it is working. 

Just a reminder. Bring your own device or use ENMU's computers.

The class is in the computer lab. 

Silas Laspada offers an informal tutoring session for us to practice our skills and to have our questions answered on computers or our iphones. Silas is a home school student who has volunteered to help us with this project. Small donations accepted for our instructor, but are optional.

Creative Aging wants to help older adults become as compatible with the digital world. Thank you for your consideration of this weekly tutorial session. 

ENMU is giving us the space & time to learn at our own pace and be supportive toward one another in the process.

The class will start at 10am and go for an hour or more depending on interest.

Fort Stanton Museum needs volunteers

Significant need exists for volunteers at the Ft. Stanton Museum, which is located at Ft. Stanton, N.M. Currently, the museum is open seven days a week, and there are two shifts available: from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The duties that volunteers perform are basic and include welcoming visitors to the museum, providing the visitors with a short history/introduction about the museum (which, of course, you would first learn about), starting up a movie, and opening and/or closing the museum.

Right now, the need is greatest for weekend and mid-week volunteers and staff will work with you to try to accommodate your preference for the days and times you wish to serve.

 Come join us for some good ‘ole foot-tapping music by local musicians Roland Burnett, Dale Boren, Roy Black, Randy Jones, Jerry Burnett, Russell Burris, Scott Wilson and Chuck George. These musicians strum and sing some mighty fine western, gospel and old-time music for listening pleasure!

Cowboy poet, Chuck George, will share some of his poetic compositions. Nothing like a rhyming cowboy to put a smile on your face!

Dia de los Muertos Celebration in Lincoln on Saturday, Oct. 29: 10am to 4 pm

The third annual Dia de Los Muertos celebration comes to the Village of Lincoln on Saturday, October 29th with a full range of fun events planned; admission is free.  The event is from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The Village of Lincoln is located 12 miles east of Capitan, on Highway 380 (Calle la Placita).

Family activities include mask decorating, paper flower making, face painting by popular local artists and displays  of "ofrendas". These free events will occur throughout the town of Lincoln.  Dr. Cynthia Orozco will demonstrate the building of an "ofrenda" and talk about this Hispanic tradition.  Mariachi bands and folkloric dancers will entertain. A schedule of events will be posted at various merchants' locations.  Door prizes will be offered;  get free tickets from participating merchants in Lincoln.

The story of Dia de Los Muertos  (Day of the Dead), observed  the world over, is celebrated in many ways, including the decoration of cemeteries and the building of "ofrendas", or altars to the deceased decorated with flowers, food offerings, photos and mementos.  This celebration expresses the idea that death is not to be feared, but embraced as a part of life.  Communities and families await the return of lost loved ones for food, music and fun.

Entertainment will feature "La Ultima", a New Mexico Spanish music trio from Carrizozo, "Mariachi Univo" from Carlsbad, NM,  and "Lubbock's All Star Mariachi Band" of Lubbock, TX;.  The musicians  will be performing for the entire day, throughout Lincoln. The Hondo Dancers will perform traditional Folklorico dances.

 Featured speaker is Dr. Cynthia Orozco, who will build an "ofrenda" for Juan Patron, the first known teacher in Lincoln County and a speaker of the house for the Territorial Legislature in the 19th Century.   While building the "ofrenda",   Dr. Orozco will discuss the history of the observance by indigenous people of  Mexico,  Europe and the U.S.   Orozco has taught New Mexico, Lincoln County, and U.S. history, and the humanities at ENMU for 15 years.  Born and raised in Texas, she has personal experience with "Dia de Los Muertos".   Her talk will take place in the Lincoln Community Church at 3 p.m.

Local eateries will provide food and drink specials.
