From Global Citizen website

EDUCATION

This Best-Selling Author Just Donated $1.25M to School Libraries

Why Global Citizens Should Care
Children can’t reach their full potential and contribute to their communities without basic reading skills. To end poverty we must promote global literacy and ensure all students have the resources they need to learn.

Best-selling author James Patterson just made another generous pledge to support child literacy.
On Tuesday, Patterson announced he’s giving $1.25 million to classroom libraries in 2019,  according to the Associated Press. It’s his fifth contribution to the Patterson Partnership with Scholastic Book Clubs, an initiative to “get excellent children's books into the hands of every child.” The author is donating $250 each to 4,000 teachers around the US to help them purchase books.
The partnership will also distribute $500 each to 500 teachers with three years or less experience in partnership with Scholastic. The program is taking applications online until July 31, and a winner will be announced in September.

“Illiteracy—or lack of reading proficiency—is a huge and often daunting issue in this country,” Patterson said in a statement released by Scholastic. “Tackling this epidemic can be overwhelming for parents and educators alike. But we have to start somewhere.
“Getting books into the hands of children is an excellent place to start,” he said.

Known for his novels, including hit series such as Alex Cross and Women’s Murder Club, Patterson has been committed to child literacy throughout his career. He’s donated $7.25 million to school and classroom libraries through his partnership with Scholastic Book Clubs, launched in 2015
The benefits of investing in child literacy are endless –– it boosts participation in the labor market, improves health and nutrition, reduces poverty, and expands life opportunities. But globally, 250 million children are failing to acquire basic literacy skills, and in many US states, more than 40% of students read below grade level, Patterson explained in his statement.
Cara Schrack, director of education for the organization Save the Children’s US programs, told Global Citizen she endorses Patterson’s book program. For many children, the school library is the only library in their community.
“It’s a great initiative,” Schrack said.
Schracks stressed the need for access to books year-round, especially before third grade, when reading skills build the foundation for academic achievement.
“Overall, when you look at children of poverty, they really need to have access to high-quality resources,” Schrack said.
Children who don’t have access to books when school is out run the risk of regressing, especially if they come from a low-socioeconomic background, Schrack explained. There are a few creative ways to provide access in the interim, including "bookmobiles" that deliver books to children in rural or urban communities, or opening school libraries a few days of the week and sending students home with books to hold them over. Without programs like this keep students from falling behind, teachers end up picking up the slack.
According to one survey, US teachers spend nearly $500 of their own money every year on school supplies. The Patterson Partnership donation will help fill the funding gap.
“My hope is that my partnership with Scholastic helps teachers fill their classroom bookshelves, and gives their students access to books that they’re excited to read — and ultimately, to foster a lifelong love of reading, as I strongly believe that better readers make better people,” he said

Carrizozo Music and the Artists of 12th Street celebrate World Art Day with a concert, events and a party!
Carrizozo Music, Inc. presents a return of nationally-renown guitarist, William Feasley, in a free concert that commemorates World Art Day.  The performance takes place at 4 PM on Saturday, April 13 at the Carrizozo School Old Gym and features Mr. Feasley in a program honoring the painter, Francisco Goya, with a PowerPoint program of Goya’s paintings, and music to accompany each painting.  his program is sponsored by a generous grant from Westaf and the NEA.  School Outreach Program  CHANGED to Monday, April 15 @ 10 am
Echos of Goya is divided into three parts, starting with Music that was around Goya when he was making his art.  The program begins with three short works by an obscure Spanish guitarist/composer, Fernando Fernandiere, who came from Madrid around the same time as Goya. Next comes music of Fernando Sor, the great Spanish guitarist who enjoyed the patronage of the Duke and Duchess of Alba at the same time as Goya’s alleged liaison with the Duchess of Alba.  Sor’s Grand Solo is performed with Goya’s epic portrait of the Duchess (pointing to “solo Goya” - “only Goya” written in the dust at her feet).
Next we hear The Music inspired by Goya’s Art. Two selections from Enrique Granados’ opera Goyescas are performed followed by four selections from Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Capriccios of Goya based on the seminal book of etchings Los Capprichos that nearly had Goya dragged in front of the Inquisition. This is followed by “Goya Portraits” by the contemporary Cuban American composer Jose Lezcano.
Finally, Music that Mr. Feasley associates with Goya. His journey with the guitar began in earnest with his family moving to Malaga, Spain, so that his father, Robert Feasley, could paint the Spanish landscapes and people.  William developed an indelible association of Spain, the art of Goya and the guitar. He ends the program with “Invocation and Dance” by Rodrigo paired with Goya’s ghoulish  masterpiece “the Incantation” and then, on notes of light and brilliance, Guajiras de Lucia by the Spanish Flamenco master paired with Goya’s final and incandescent “The Milk Maid of Bordeaux”.
William Feasley was the first guitarist to receive Peabody Conservatory’s coveted Artist Diploma. Since making his debut in 1980 with the San Francisco Ballet performing Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez for Lou Christenson’s ballet, Don Juan, Feasley has maintained an active international touring schedule. A student of Andres Segovia, he has been a featured performer at international guitar festivals in Poland, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, Bolivia, Australian, Slovakia, and Peru. Feasley has also toured extensively for the US State Department. His playing has been described by the Washington Post as sounding “in the words of Segovia, like a ‘small orchestra’ in the variety of colors coaxed from a single guitar.” He has released six critically-acclaimed recordings for the Sonora and Center Earth Labels.
A school outreach concert will take place on Thursday, April 11 at 3 PM in the Carrizozo School Old Gym 3 PM.  Both concerts are free and open to the public.
