YOUR library. Self-supporting with YOUR help.

The Capitan Public Library is an all volunteer organization.  Several times a year we have a big fund raiser to keep operating the library.  Many of you come to the plant sale in the spring and now comes the second one, the Holiday Bazaar.  Many volunteers have worked hard to make and provide unique gifts.  The Library orders SEE's Candy special for the Bazaar, so be sure to come pick up several boxes and bars for presents and stocking stuffers.   There will be an array of delicious baked goods, but you have to come early, things go fast.  

The CPL is the hub of the community.  It provides and teaches computer training.  Job seekers come to fill out job applications.  Children come to do their homework.  Tourists stop by to find out where to go in Capitan and Lincoln County.  Debbie Myers does an incredible summer school program and after school program.  Genealogy research is available by appointment through volunteer, Kris Shearer.  Programs are presented once a month on a first Fridays or a Sunday afternoon.  A book club meets every first Thursday of the month.  ALL are welcome to attend this stimulating round table discussion of books.  A group of people meet for Bible study on Fridays.

The Not Too Shabby Shop, which has its own group of volunteers, is a vital part of the library.  The items donated and sold brings money for the operating costs of the library. So shop locally at N2SS.

Donations from the public and business also contribute to the on-going day-to-day expenses of the library.  Please make a tax-deductible donation today.

If you have books that you would like to donate, bring them to the CPL.  Every donated book helps to pay for the operation of the library.

Class Acts at the Spencer Theater - Nov 30

Class Acts at the Spencer Theater are children's programs during the day.  Usually kids come from their schools by bus, but home-school children and the public are welcome to attend.   There are two shows.  Tickets are $5.  Call the Spencer Theater box office at 575.336.4800 to reserve your tickets to November 30th program:

Dali Ballet Company in Ruidoso presents its twelfth annual production of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" Friday, December 8 at 7 PM and Saturday, December 9 at 2 PM and 7 PM at the Spencer Theater in Alto, north of Ruidoso. Just saw Maria's art in the Ruidoso Convention Center this weekend while at the Christmas Jubilee.  The Convention Center commissioned local artists for the artwork hanging in the hallways. This painting is very large and beautiful!  And it is the same theme seen in the library right now.  Go see before it leaves!

Grand opening of new state veterans cemetery set for Nov. 6

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

• Setting offers solitude and scenery

A grand opening for Ft. Stanton State Veterans Cemetery, New Mexico’s first state-managed cemetery for honorably discharged veterans and their spouses, is set for 1:30 p.m., Nov. 6.

The cemetery at 1398 New Mexico Highway 220, also known as Airport Road, features 650 in-ground crypts and 480 columbarium niches for cremated remains. It was built through an application sent by the state to the Veterans Administration’s Cemetery Grants Program that provides funding for VA-funded, but state-managed cemeteries for rural areas.

That application was submitted as the result of the State Cemetery Program Initiative launched by Gov. Susana Martinez in 2013 to build veterans’ cemeteries for rural New Mexico’s veterans living too far from the state’s two existing national cemeteries in Santa Fe and Ft. Bayard.

The new cemetery was built based on to VA standards and will be managed by the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services. The cemetery is situated on land adjoining the existing Ft. Stanton Merchant Marine and Military Cemetery on the grounds of historic Ft. Stanton, which opened in 1855 as a territorial outpost of the U.S. Army. The area now is a New Mexico State Historic Site.

Library notes (to take note of)

Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 7, the library will close at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The library has four Windows 10 computers (home) for sale for $75.  These are the towers only.  If you are interested, please see Barbara, Pat or Debbie.

Sunday, Nov. 12, the library will hold an open house primarily for the County, Village and School.  We hope to generate some interest in the library.  The open house starts at 3:00 and will run until 5:00 or so. Capitan library volunteers can help by providing finger foods and tasty treats for this event.  They need to know we have a GREAT bunch of volunteers that keep this library running.

Friday, Nov 3 at 10:30 am in C'zozo

On Friday, November 3^rd, at 10:30 AM, The D'Amore Duo will play classical guitar and oboe duets in the Carrizozo Town Hall.  

Founded in 1991 and based in Washington, DC, the D'Amore Duo has toured internationally and domestically to enthusiastic reviews.  Their program features tangos, jazz and composers Bach and Handel.  Come early to grab a cup of coffee and a pastry. 

The Carrizozo Town Hall is located at 409 9^th Street (corner of 10^th and E Ave).
