Carrizozo Music and the Artists of 12th Street celebrate World Art Day with a concert, events and a party! 

Carrizozo Music, Inc. presents a return of nationally-renown guitarist, William Feasley, in a free concert that commemorates World Art Day.  The performance takes place at 4 PM on Saturday, April 13 at the Carrizozo School Old Gym and features Mr. Feasley in a program honoring the painter, Francisco Goya, with a PowerPoint program of Goya’s paintings, and music to accompany each painting.  his program is sponsored by a generous grant from Westaf and the NEA.  School Outreach Program  CHANGED to Monday, April 15 @ 10 am

Echos of Goya is divided into three parts, starting with Music that was around Goya when he was making his art.  The program begins with three short works by an obscure Spanish guitarist/composer, Fernando Fernandiere, who came from Madrid around the same time as Goya. Next comes music of Fernando Sor, the great Spanish guitarist who enjoyed the patronage of the Duke and Duchess of Alba at the same time as Goya’s alleged liaison with the Duchess of Alba.  Sor’s Grand Solo is performed with Goya’s epic portrait of the Duchess (pointing to “solo Goya” - “only Goya” written in the dust at her feet).

Next we hear The Music inspired by Goya’s Art. Two selections from Enrique Granados’ opera Goyescas are performed followed by four selections from Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Capriccios of Goya based on the seminal book of etchings Los Capprichos that nearly had Goya dragged in front of the Inquisition. This is followed by “Goya Portraits” by the contemporary Cuban American composer Jose Lezcano. 

Finally, Music that Mr. Feasley associates with Goya. His journey with the guitar began in earnest with his family moving to Malaga, Spain, so that his father, Robert Feasley, could paint the Spanish landscapes and people.  William developed an indelible association of Spain, the art of Goya and the guitar. He ends the program with “Invocation and Dance” by Rodrigo paired with Goya’s ghoulish  masterpiece “the Incantation” and then, on notes of light and brilliance, Guajiras de Lucia by the Spanish Flamenco master paired with Goya’s final and incandescent “The Milk Maid of Bordeaux”.   

William Feasley was the first guitarist to receive Peabody Conservatory’s coveted Artist Diploma. Since making his debut in 1980 with the San Francisco Ballet performing Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez for Lou Christenson’s ballet, Don Juan, Feasley has maintained an active international touring schedule. A student of Andres Segovia, he has been a featured performer at international guitar festivals in Poland, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, Bolivia, Australian, Slovakia, and Peru. Feasley has also toured extensively for the US State Department. His playing has been described by the Washington Post as sounding “in the words of Segovia, like a ‘small orchestra’ in the variety of colors coaxed from a single guitar.” He has released six critically-acclaimed recordings for the Sonora and Center Earth Labels.

A school outreach concert will take place on Thursday, April 11 at 3 PM in the Carrizozo School Old Gym 3 PM.  Both concerts are free and open to the public.
