Summer ENMU-R singing classes at CPL

Summer classes through ENMU-Ruidoso at Capitan Public Library beginning June 3. Two will be held at the Library - but you must register through the college. 

1. Voice Class for Teens and Adults 

 Monthly Classes on Saturdays:

June 3, 10, 18, and July 1 (no class June 24)

July 8, 15, 22, 29

Aug. 5, 12, 19, 26

Time:  2 to 3:30 p.m.

Tuition: $90 per month.  Sign up for one month or all three!
Sign up at the beginning of each month: June, July and August.

Explore the development of your voice through classical, musical theatre
and folk repertoire. You will learn vocal warm-ups to increase your
range and bring out your unique sound and then apply your new skills
through song performance.

2. Performance Workshop for Teens and Adults

Saturdays beginning June 3 through August 26 

 Monthly Classes on Saturdays:

Work on your performance skills through jazz, pop, and musical theatre 
repertoire. Perform new songs each week in class and build your rep while 

honing your craft.  Each monthly workshop will culminate in a

 performance cabaret.
 Sign up at the beginning of each month: June, July, and August.

3. PRIVATE VOICE LESSONS AND 
 VOCAL COACHING FOR CHILDREN, 
TEENS AND ADULTS 

$105 for 4 half-hour lessons (recommended for ages 8 to 14);

$155 for 4 forty-five-minute lessons;

$205 for 4 one-hour lessons (recommended for ages 14 to adult)

 at ENMU-Ruidoso.

4. MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE 
CAMP

Monday-Friday, June 5-9, June 12-16, July 10-14, July 17-

 Each week there will be a showcase performance

 for family and friends. 

For Kids (Ages 8 to 12): 1 to 3 p.m. Learn the basics
 of musical theatre performance while singing

 fun musical theatre songs in an active learning 

environment!

For Teens (Ages 13-18): 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Develop

your musical theatre performance abilities and enhance

your stage presence. Sing for fun, prepare an audition

piece, and continue to hone your skills in a supportive

environment.

Time is running out for seniors to get a $10 lifetime pass to National Parks

Glacier National Park

IF you are 62 or older, you can get your pass at the Smokey Bear Ranger Station on Mechem Dr., in Ruidoso.  They take cash, checks, and credit cards.  It is quick and will last you a lifetime.  No one seems to know WHEN the price will be increased. 

Folks age 62 and older who love America's national parks and monuments can purchase a lifetime pass for $10, but that bargain won't last much longer.

The cost of a National Park Service lifetime pass will increase to $80, but just when that price hike will occur is unclear.

When enacted, it will be the first increase since 1994.

The senior pass offers lifetime admission to more than 2,000 recreation sites managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, Fish and Wildlife Service, Forest Service, National Park Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. 

Pass holders also get 50 percent off certain National Park Service fees, including camping, swimming, boat launch and other services.

At $10, the pass is an incredible bargain. At $80, it's still a great deal. Admission to Grand Canyon National Park, for example, is $30 for seven days.

The senior pass isn’t the only deal the park service offers. Other bargains include:

• Annual pass: Available to anyone for $80.
• Military pass: Free annual pass for current military members (including reserve and National Guard members).
• Fourth Grader pass: Free to U.S. fourth-grade students (and accompanying family) from the start of the school year through the following summer.
• Access pass: Free to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have permanent disabilities.
• Volunteer pass: Free to volunteers with 250 hours of service to participating federal agencies.

When asked about the reasons for the fee increase and when it would occur, NPS spokesman Tom Crosson said it was “congressionally mandated” and the date it would take place has not been determined.

Last December Congress approved the National Parks Service Centennial Act, which included a provision to raise the fee. Proceeds will fund park projects and services.

Planned Electric Outage

Scheduled Electric Outage – 05/23-24/2017

Otero County Electric Co-op (OCEC) will have a scheduled electric outage next week that will affect all members whose service is fed out of the Carrizozo and Capitan Substations.

The outage will begin at 11 PM Tuesday, May 23, and

last until 3 AM Wednesday morning, May 24.

Members in Capitan, Carrizozo, Nogal and outlying areas

can expect the outage to last for about four (4) hours,

providing crews do not encounter any unforeseen problems.

Crews from both OCEC and Tri-State Generation & Transmission will be replacing insulators inside the substations that have been damaged during past lightning storms, repairing and adding additional switches, and performing other necessary system maintenance to insure the reliability of electric service to members.

June 6: Public Update on the Lincoln National Forest Planning Process

Sabrina Flores, Chief Planner for the Lincoln National Forest, will be in Ruidoso the evening of June 6, 2017 to update the Public on the Planning Process of the 2015 Lincoln National Forest Plan.  This is the promised Update to be delivered to the public in the Spring of 2017 and marks approximately the half-way point for that process.  There has been a considerable amount of attention given to this plan not only by the public at large but by many forestry and environmental groups in the area as well as the state and United States.

This is YOUR chance to come and review the work that has been done so far by the USFS!  Bring your list of questions, comments and concerns for this work as it is one of the primary opportunities for you to have your say directly to those involved in this important process that will effect how the Lincoln National Forest is run/operated for the next 15+ years or more.  Anyone that enjoys and uses the forested lands for grazing, hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, off-road activities; or, derives their living from the national forests should have an interest in this planning process.  Invite your friends, neighbors and business acquaintances to attend this very important meeting.

Honoring the memory of those who served their country

Flag placements on the grave sites of those buried at Fort Stanton Veteran's State Cemetery will be done in conjunction of the Memorial Day Weekend on

 Friday, May 26^th, at 3 PM. 

 We especially invite family and friends to participate.  It is an honor and a privilege to place flags on those who served our country and the spouses that supported them.   The Spencer Volunteer Ushers will be taking the lead and seeing that this is done.  Volunteers who wish to help can let Cecile know at

May 19th Creative Aging informative meeting

This is our May Creative Monthly Meeting to be held at 10am, Friday, May 19th at ENMU.

1. The good news is that we are meeting tomorrow morning in #115 at 10am to hear Gary Williams talk about the Livability Model from AARP. Gary and I will both address the concept of senior empowerment as well. His talk will review AARP's work on National and State Livability Programs. He will encourage our group to begin the formal process of enrolling into this program. He can also address the concept of both individual empowerment by his own example as well as demonstrating how individuals empowered to work in community can make significant change to enhance quality of life experiences for all.

2. The not so good news is that Liz Stefanics is ill and will not be able to be with us tomorrow, but will return to Creative Aging at our August meeting on August 25th.

 Come early, network and enjoy refreshments.

13 books to read before they become movies in 2017

Summer movie season is almost upon us, which means you have some homework.

2017 has already had a handful of book-to-movie adaptations and there are a host more coming, featuring stars like Emma Watson, Idris Elba and Jacob Tremblay. But don’t worry, you still have time to head to the library, turn on your Kindle or audiobook and catch up. Here are 13 books that you’ll be hearing more about as they head to the screen this year.

1. The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman

The Holocaust drama already has hit the big screen, but there's plenty of time to catch up before it leaves theaters. The book tells the true story of the Warsaw Zoo owners who saved hundreds of Jewish people from the Nazis in occupied Poland by hiding them in their villa and empty cages. The adaptation stars Jessica Chastain and Daniel Brühl.

2. The Lost City of Z by David Grann

Journalist David Grann tells the true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett, who disappeared while searching for a fabled civilization in the Amazon in 1925. The film version (in theaters April 14) will star Tom Holland, Charlie Hunnam, Sienna Miller and Robert Pattinson.

3. The Circle by Dave Eggers

A young woman takes a job at a Google-like tech conglomerate, which is great until things start to get a little scary. The film (in theaters April 28) puts together big stars Emma Watson, Tom Hanks and John Boyega.

4. The Dinner by Herman Koch

This dark and intense novel follows two sets of parents grappling with the horrible crime their teenage sons have committed. The couples in the film (in theaters May 5) are played by Laura Linney, Steve Coogan, Richard Gere and Rebecca Hall.

5. Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

This young-adult novel is about a girl with a rare condition that makes her allergic to almost everything, leading to a life in quarantine. Then she meets the boy next door. Amandla Stenberg, Nick Robinson and Anika Noni Rose star (in theaters May 19).

6. My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier

The classic novel follows a young Englishman and his beautiful, mysterious cousin, who may or may not have been involved in a murder. Playing the titular Rachel in the movie (in theaters June 9) is a real-life Rachel: Ms. Weisz.

7. The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger by Stephen King

Stephen King’s sci-fi epic follows "gunslinger" Roland Deschain as he searches for the dark tower, hoping it will preserve his dying world. Idris Elba is leading the movie (in theaters Aug. 4) as Roland.

8. Tulip Fever by Deborah Moggach

This period piece (in theaters Aug. 25) follows an artist who falls in love with the young married woman he is commissioned to paint during the tulip maniaof 16th-century Amsterdam. Alicia Vikander, Christoph Waltz and Cara Delevingne are a part of the star-studded cast.

9. It by Stephen King

The master is on a roll with adaptations this year. It (in theaters Sept. 8) follows seven adults who return to their hometown to confront an evil from their childhoods. And, yes, it has that clown, who will be played by Bill Skarsgård.

10. The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin

Two strangers live through a plane crash and must survive in the wilderness together. The movie (in theaters Oct. 20) casts Idris Elba and Kate Winslet as these very beautiful crash survivors.

11. Thank You for Your Service by David Finkel

This non-fiction book follows the lives of soldiers as they adjust to life back home after serving overseas. Miles Teller and Amy Schumer are set to star in the adaptation (in theaters Oct. 27).

12. Wonder by R.J. Palacio

The novel follows Auggie, a young boy with a serious facial deformity struggling to be accepted in a new school. Jacob Tremblay and Julia Roberts star in the film (in theaters Nov. 17).

13. Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

The classic Agatha Christie mystery follows detective Hercule Poirot as he attempts to solve a murder on the famous train. The adaptation (in theaters Nov. 22) is directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh, along with big names including Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley and Judi Dench.
