Artist for July & August: April Simpson

Getting down to the basics in life:  The Beauty that Surrounds Us and the Cowboy Way of Life!    

A devoted Christian woman, April Simpson gives the credit to God and encouragement from her cowboy husband, Rick Simpson, for going forward with promoting her photography, "A. Simpson Photography".  April says, " I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to capture God's amazing creations through the eye of a lens."

Her favorite subjects are wildlife and nature, but April does not limit herself to just those subjects.  She loves to snap and capture notable or simple happenings and subjects that can be shared with others.  Those "special moments..." can then be "forever remembered..," she says.

The Simpsons live in Glencoe and grow their own herbs, fruits and vegetables and maintain 
irrigated pasture for their livestock.

April helps out with her husband's outfitting business, S-S Outfitters, by creating and maintaining
its website, business cards and brochures and by being the business secretary/purchasing agent.

Enjoying her involvement in so many activities and enterprises , April comments, "it's about doing 
what you love.  The mountains call me."

She is simply thankful for the "...opportunities God has given us. We have opportunities to do things
people dream about doing.  For us, well, we live them. It's an awesome adventure!"

The Capitan Public Library is fortunate to have April Simpson's photographs to share with the public during this time of year with all the Capitan events and rodeos occurring throughout the summer.

2nd Friday in July at 7 pm

Come hear Bryan White tell us “What it is like to live and work in Antarctica” at the Capitan Library Friday, July 10 at 7 p.m. As always, refreshments after the talk.

Bryan  is a retired Navy Commander and aviator.  The last five years of his active duty were
 with the U.S. Antarctic program.  For three years he was the operations officer for “Operation Deep Freeze”, the U.S. Navy’s role at the Antarctica base and his last two years as Base Commander of the U.S. facility in Christchurch, New Zealand.

 During his tenure as operations officer, he would spend the "Austral" summer seasons -approximately 5 & 1/2 months each year- at McMurdo Station, Antarctica.  (The U.S. main base in Antarctica).  Just a side note, he and his wife met in Antarctica!  Really, what are the odds of meeting your mate in Antarctica?

This presentation is more like a conversation with the audience, supported with slides of the photographs he took.  It will be quite informal, complete with personal antidotes, over view of what the U.S. does in Antarctica, some historical data on Antarctic exploration and various facilities.   Questions are welcomed.  His wife will be there with a few items from Antarctica.  She spent two “Austral” summer seasons in Antarctica as well.  Come join Bryan sharing his personal experiences of the "way down-under".

Dragons converge at the Library

Ruidoso artist, Carla Morrow, a.k.a. the Dragon Lady., is the current artist displaying prints of her paintings at the library.  She has provided coloring sheets for the kids, too.   (Coloring pages located on the bookshelf below the prints on the wall.)   Prints of her paintings are available for purchase at her website: www.dragonladyart.com   The prints will be on display through June 30th.

Carla explains her magical attraction to dragons.  "Dragons hold a unique position in my heart.   They are one of the few truly universal icons and images for all mankind.  Dragons existed in every culture as far back as I could find in my research.  Religion, philosophy, myth and even history all carried allusions of the dragon. 
"Even today, the dragon still has a firm grip on our waking and sleeping minds.  Through the written word, games movies and advertisements, dragons fly through our imaginations and sing in our hearts."

 

Baby dragons or young Dragonlings started finding their way out of the Fairyrelm through Carls's paintings in 2013.  She calls this group  Little Wings Dragons™.  Her future project involves crowd funding for a dragonling plush and coloring books.

April is Amnesty Month.  Bring back your overdue books and no overdue fines will be charged.  This is a good time to check your book cases, under the kid's beds, your DVD storage area, etc.

Discover the Three Rivers Area with Gary Cozzens

Join us at the Capitan Public Library on Friday, April 3, at 7 p.m. for the April First Friday event: local historian and author, Gary Cozzens, introducing and discussing his latest book, Tres Ritos.     

In Tres Ritos, Cozzens tells the stories of a small but intriguing place in New Mexico history.  He will share with the audience snippets and photographs from his book to intrigue us to further discover the one-thousand years of fascinating history flowing from the Three Rivers Valley in New Mexico. 

Tres Ritos was first settled by the Jornada Mogollon in AD 900, and these ancient farmers left their presence in the form of more than twenty-one thousand petroglyphs along a mile-long ridge.   The valley was visited by Spanish explorers in the 1600s and became the homeland of the Mescalero Apache about the same time. 

Patrick Coghlan, the “Cattle King of Tularosa,” built a major ranch here with his cattle being supplied by Billy the Kid.  Susan McSween Barber, the widow of Alexander McSween of Lincoln County War fame, prospered here as the “Cattle Queen of New Mexico".  Albert Fall, infamous for his participation in the Tea Pot Dome scandal, owned Coghlan’s ranch.  There are many more historical tales and photographs to discover  in Tres Rios.   

 A native New Mexican, Gary Cozzens grew up in Portales, graduated from Portales High School and Eastern New Mexico University earning a double major in history and political science.  Following graduation he served in the United States Marine Corps for a total of 24 years, including Operation Desert Storm, and retired as a Major in 1999. 

Cozzens is currently the Manager of Lincoln Historic Site in Lincoln, New Mexico.  He is a member of the Lincoln County Historical Society, the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, the Lincoln County Site Watch program and a member of the Historical Society of New Mexico and the Friends of Historic Lincoln. 

Cozzens is the author of the books The Nogal Mesa and Capitan, published by The History Press. 

Refreshments will be served following the book presentation.  

Tres Ritos books will be available for the audience to purchase and have signed by the author.

A Watershed Moment: Stakeholders and Stewardship of Lincoln County Water Basins When Friday March 13, 2015 from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM MDT Add to Calendar Where Ruidoso Convention Center 111 Sierra Blanca Drive Ruidoso, NM 88345 Driving Directions Drought, fire and population growth are just some of the factors affecting the Upper Hondo watershed. In order to address the challenges Lincoln County faces, ENMU-Ruidoso Community Education is focusing on watersheds for its annual Forest Health conference. "A Watershed Moment: Stakeholders and Stewardship of Lincoln County Water Basins" will be held Friday, March 13 at the Ruidoso Convention Center. Several speakers will give presentations on a wide range of topics concerning watersheds beginning at 9:00 am and lasting through 4:30 pm. The talks will be free and open to the public. The Little Bear fire coalesced several groups into working together and towards substantive change. The college's Forest Health series has allowed several local experts to offer myriad perspectives to treatments and plans as well as problems that still need to be addressed. The conference will build on those relationships and public outreach efforts. Sessions will attempt to explain what makes up a watershed, including the definition of aquifer, the dynamics of recharge, ground versus surface water, the health of the Rio Ruidoso, Rio Bonito, Rio Hondo as well as smaller tributaries such as Eagle and Salado Creeks and water restoration projects that are taking place. Armed Services Blood Program and Holloman Blood Drive

HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The Armed Services Blood Program and Holloman will hold a blood drive on Tuesday, March 10, at the Community Activity Center from 10 am until 2 pm.

"The goal for this drive is 50 donations," said Tech. Sgt. Chelsie Davia with the 49th Medical Group. "The past few drives we have reached 45, so we really would like to break 50."

There is a potential to accept 60 donors over the four-hour drive with all units collected going directly to benefit active duty servicemembers and their families. Donations ensure life-saving blood products are available whenever and wherever servicemembers and their families are in need.

"With all the military operations going on in the world today, there is an increased need for blood," Davia said. "This program provides an opportunity for servicemembers, their families and civilians to support our military in a definitive, meaningful way."

The ASBP is the official U.S. military blood program and collects a list from units deployed overseas of what types and how much blood is needed. Once they've sent the requested amount, the remaining blood goes into a pool that is then distributed as needed to different military treatment facilities throughout the Armed Forces.

"You have what it takes to save three lives with a single donation," Davia said. "By giving a little of yourself, your donation gives sick or injured troops and their families a second chance at life."

All Team Holloman members are encouraged to donate and possibly save the life of a servicemember serving their country. Additionally, anyone with a United States government identification card and access to Holloman is invited to take part. ID card holders may escort friends, neighbors or family members to the blood drive.
Eligibility requirements can be found at www.militaryblood.dod.mil/Donors/can_i_donate.aspx.

Most healthy adults are eligible to give blood, however, there are some reasons a person may be deferred from donating temporarily, indefinitely or permanently. Deferral criteria have been established for the protection of those donating and for those receiving transfusions in accordance with the Food and Drug Administration regulatory requirements, AABB standards and Department of Defense policies.

Walk-ins are welcome for the blood drive; however, appointments can be made on the Armed Services Blood Program website, www.militaryblood.dod.mil. The website also contains information on requirements to donate and a list of upcoming drives.
